Walleye Fishing

Lake Oahe, South Dakota Walleye Fishing

Lake Oahe is holding some MONSTER walleyes in recent years, come stay and fish with us!

Walleye Fishing Patterns for Lake Oahe

The walleye fishing on Lake Oahe is awful tough to beat right now in terms of the quality of the walleyes being caught.

In the spring, you can find the fish back in the bays early around the time they spawn.  Walleyes then move into the lake toward the end of June.  After the spawn, they move to the drop offs along submerged points so they can feed on bait fish.

When the heat of summer picks up, the fish slide deeper towards the old river channel or in trees (when you can find them).

The fall can be a magical time as well, as many big fish are caught at this time.   They're more often than not caught in deep water at this time of the year.

Walleye Tips for Taming Oahe

In the spring when the walleyes are in the bays, we usually pitch jigs and plastics or jigs and minnows.  If you time it right, you can catch quite a few LARGE walleyes, and the occasional GIANT northern pike.

Usually around early to late June, they move to the drop-offs around submerged points so they can feed on bait fish.

Once the fish start sliding deep, it's tough to beat trolling the old river channel.  You'll be surprised what you find.

Fall walleye fishing has been made famous as of recent years.  Last fall, the South Dakota state walleye record was broken TWICE.  Many feel it'll fall again this year.  Time will tell.
